Stone,

I have done a lot of research on this topic recently. I recommend Leupold Vari-X III, Burris Signature, Burris Fullfield, Bausch & Lomb 4000 and Weaver scopes.

The Burris scopes are outstanding - you just don't see as many of them as you do Leupolds. Be sure to give the 100 % American-made Burris scopes a careful look. For all but sure 'nuf low light (barely light and nearly dark) shooting, the Burris Fullfield 6x-18x is a best buy at around $286. The Burris Signature 4x-16x at around $400 is even better.

The B&L 4x-16 ($325) and Weaver 4x-16x ($255) are made in Japan and are very good buys for the money.

The German scopes and US Optics are out of my price range.

Whatever you buy, get the Burris Signature rings and dual dovetail bases. Click link below for more info.

You should get better results from properly made hand loads. If you like doing picky, precise work, and the superior performance it can bring, you should investigate hand loading.

The .223 is more than adequate for your hunting application.

Good luck.

Jim
