You need a higher resolution in order to adequately see the target for smaller groups My personal favorites are Leupold's and recently Nightforce. However, if I was looking for a scope that had a target dot, sunshades, variable high power and was relatively inexpensive I would get a BSA. At the ene of the month I'll most likely order 36X to use on rifles when developing loads.
Midway has the 8x32x target on sale for $144.99 shipped, the 6x24 for $134.99. I feel that the 8x32 is clearer at the higher powers. Just because it goes to 32x, does not mean you have to crank up to 32X. It has high enough resolution for paper target work and it is variable so you could use it for hunting also, just don't crank the power up so high.
Also keep in mind that you will need a stable shooting platform, rear and front rest to be most effective.
This is most likely the least amount of funds you can invest to give you the most improvement.
