I'm ready to build up a new varmint rifle from scratch. I've bought a Rem 700 short action with large case head, Canjar trigger, planning on a Krieger barrel and am going to sleeve the action and put it all (most likely) in an HS Precision stock on pillar bedding. I'm going to blueprint the action, square the face and lap the lugs. I just haven't decided on a caliber. I've got a .220 Swift, a .22-250 and a .223. I'm leaning toward one of the .22 Cheetah rounds the .22-250 Ackley Improved or maybe one of the 6mm cartridges. I've heard some awfully good things about the 6mm PPC for varmints even though the velocity leaves a lot to be desired. I hear the accuracy more than makes up for the loss of velocity. Any comments from the Peanut Gallery on choice of caliber? Any further recommendations on alterations and accurizing on this action?
