This last weekend I tried something new for me. I have two new guns I was breaking in, one is a new .260 Rem and the Other a .220 swift. Both guns were first bore cleaned and scrubbed with Rem bore clean, and Jb bore paste, this I hope was to take out any ruff marks. I them coated both barrels with molly before any shots were taken or fireforming shots.
Both guns were bore sighted by me and shot a 25 yards to zero, 3 shots each put me on at 25 yards. Next the target was set at 100 yards, five shot groups were shot with both the 220 and 260. Now this is what is strange, Both of them showed no sighs of walking or stringing shots, both put all five rounds in about .60 to .80 groups the 220 doing the best. This is still just fireforming the rounds and testing for fouling in the barrels. At this point I set down and cleaned the guns top to bottom and remolled the barrels.
I did set the bullets on both to touch the lands with no freebore to start with. When cleaning I got no and I mean no copper fouling from the barrels at all, but both guns were shot using molly bullets, (coated at home) I know this is not the way to break them in but after shooting 50 rounds in each after first 5 , in 5 round groups, I am not showing any trouble at all in the group sizes. The 220 is getting better 77vt and the 260 is staying about the same is stock 77mark 2 with trigger work done by me.
Now Am I on to somthing or did I just doom these barrels to a sure early death? Any comment will be welcomed and I do take any help for this is my first try with molly and breaking in this way!!!
