S. Cal. Varmint Hunting

I live just North of San Diego and am looking for good places to hunt varmints. I have heard that Barstow has lots of Ground Squirrels but can not get any info on where or who to ask permission to shoot there. Any ideas on a place to hunt in the South Land or hunting around Barstow would be great. Thanks and good hunting, John
