I wouldn't be too down on yourself. Knowing his personal gun no doubt had an effect on the results. Confidence and feel are vital to shoot tiny groups. Also very few people who haven't worked with windflags a great deal pay adequate attention to wind when shooting. Even when I don't put windflags out now, I am much more attentive to conditions. That has done more to tighten groups than all my load development.
