I had just recently called a red fox to within three or four feet of me when I snowshoed into a remote area alone to call where a bobcat had been known to hang out. I'd heard about how bobcats sneaked in slowly and were hard to see, so I backed into a small fir tree, got settled, and started calling downwind. I'd been calling for 15 or 20 minutes without seeing anything, but decided to stay longer because there was sign in the area. I'd just finished another sequence of my best dying snowshoe hare sounds when I though I heard something behind me. Thinking that the bobcat had come in behind me, I tried to turn in super slow motion with my shotgun ready. Just as I had gotten about half way around, the half full canteen of water in the daypack on my back shifted and banged against my back as it made a strange gurgling sound. I just about jumped out of my boots thinking that critter was on my back! My snowshoes tripped me up and I landed face down in the snow. When no cat materialized and I caught my breath, I had a good belly laugh. I was also glad that I was alone. None of my friends would have ever let me live that down. Woulda' made a good video though. - Theo
