Ian: If it is a choice between these 2 fine calibers then there is less noise, less recoil and I believe much more killing effect from the 17 MachIV. I have had the MachIV for 2 1/2 years now and am incredibly impressed with every thing about the MachIV including superb accuracy (Shilen barrel), ease of cleaning (Moly-coated - of course), quietness, lack of recoil (I can spot my own shots), and lack of damage to pelts of the Varmints. I have killed very large Rock Chucks with my MachIV to 325 yards many many times and the Chucks die instantly with no movement not even tail flagging! Go with the MachIV in this comparison. I would go another inch or two on the barrel length with either cartridge though.
