NO stretching the truth here either...I was hunting chucks here in Southern Michigan with a buddy on his field, which had beans just about 3-4" tall growing in it. The chucks had eaten all of the beans to about 15 feet around their mounds so they were easy to see. AND, they had never been shot at before so they were not intimidated by people or guns! They were more curious than cautious. There are houses on 3 corners of these two fields which are seperated by a thick treeline. We set up on one corner of the field, where we could shoot clear to the other side with no danger of hitting a house, and we were on a slight hill. Not long after our approach the chucks came out and started looking at us. We both sighted in and counted to three, and shot. He had his safety on, but I made a perfect head shot with my Ruger 77/22 Varmint. After we shot some more, we approached the hole to look in and see if we could see any and as we were about 5 feet away one stuck his head out and just looked at us. I tried to look through my scope, but it was not adjusted for such ranges, so I just shot and hit in the neck area. Beautiful THWACK at that range. We also used to sit on top of a barn which they had burrowed under and shoot down on them as they came out....and they would keep coming out to see what the noise was. Problem is, it is not long before there are no more chucks! I hope some more move in soon. Have heard a few coyote howls in the area lately, but I haven't the slightest idea how to lure them in for a shot. Anyone in SW. Michigan want to go varminting sometime? I have just about run out of critters in this area. Abundance of coons that damage property, and an occasional muskrat starts digging into the bank of the creek I live on, so I use a RWS 22 subsonic to shoot it in my residential neighborhood. Very quiet!
