Jim, I see your point and agree with it to a certain extent. A solid machine rest or return to battery setup should keep point of aim more consistent than one of us humans - especially a coffee guzzling shaky sort like myself.

On the other hand though, unless it's dead calm or indoors or perhaps a tunnel, a good group shooter will outshoot the machine most of the time I think. That is assuming of course that the machine is keeping the exact same point of aim for each shot. If the machine rest can be "aimed" quickly enough to account for conditions then you have the best of both worlds.

I've always heard that when the wind gets ugly the bag guns really shine over the return to battery rigs in BR for this reason.

Myself, I've lately come to be of the opinion that I'm more accurate than any of the rifles I currently own. Sure I throw shots, hell, sometimes I throw five in a row. But when I've had exactly the right amount of coffee and I'm feeling "on my game" I really feel like my well worn factory bores are what is keeping me from shooting smaller groups.

Have a rifle being built right now that should cure that problem. Time to build some better wind flags and start coming up with some new excuses for myself!
