Actually a 1-1/4" dia fluted barrel fluted 1/4" deep is stiffer than the 3/4" barrel which would be under the flutes and less stiff than the 1-1/4" bull barrel would be. Cooling depends not only on surface area but in the amount of temperture DIFFERENCE between the steel and air and the direction of air flow. Fins like the old tommy guns had would be more effective than long fluting and they were dropped as not effective enough.
