Removing material make sthe barrel weaker and less stiff.
The confusion comes when you compare apples and oranges.
A fluted barrel is stronger/stiffer than a barrel of equal weight.
If youtake a barrel and flute it, it will be weaker/more compliant.

By the way, who said stiffer was better in the first place?

And who cares how strong the barrel is? When's tha last time you
hung a heavy object on the end? Food for thought.
